The month of June, like every other June for decades, is associated for many Canadians and Americans of Polish descent with an important occasion - the Niagara-On-the Lake Pilgrimage. Within the Pilgrimage exists a tradition of visiting the graves of the twenty four Polish Army volunteers who died of influenza while receiving their military training. The Pilgrimage is also a commemoration of an important event - the creation of a Polish Army on Canadian soil, ready to fight for Poland's independence. This event, which strengthened the ties of many Polish immigrants to Canada and the United States with the Old Country, also shaped their patriotic feelings towards the countries which offered them new opportunities.
