Although the Nazis benefited from the Katyn Massacre in a number of
ways, they viewed the Soviet atrocity mainly as an invaluable propaganda asset.
Organized guided tours of the murder site were available for those interested. Those,
who expressed no desire to participate, but were considered by the Nazis important
as witnesses (ex.: representatives of the Polish Red Cross, British and American POWs
in German hands), were brought to Katyn almost by force.
These propaganda efforts did not affect the Polish population much, as the
hatred for Soviets by the Poles had been already deeply rooted; it did, however,
help to expose the treacherous behaviour of Poland's Anglo-American 'allies'. |
